Ernest AgerMy family and I recently moved to Whaley Bridge after thirty-five years in Devon. There is a thriving
art community in and around Exmouth where we lived and I was an active member of the local Art Group, which was established in 1946 and had around 200-250 members. I paint mainly in acrylic, with some oils, pastel and a little watercolour. In Devon, my inspiration came very much from the spectacular coastline and particularly the Exe estuary - mostly land and seascapes, often with an architectural interest. I am excited by the prospect of new stimulus from the beautiful High Peak landscape. I also paint portraits in pastel, emphasising the drama of light and shadows to bring out the character. From childhood drawing has always been a part of me - interpreting what I see in pencil seemed just natural. I have had no formal training, having made a career as a scientist. I started painting seriously around twenty-six years ago, and settled quickly into pastels, which have a strong affinity with drawing, then later moved into acrylics and oils. I am drawn to a subject by my emotional reaction to it. I like the play of light on water, or wet pavements, the different moods of water under different skies, and the contrast of shadowy figures against the light. I like dawn and evening light, with long shadows and strong highlights. My interiors also tend to have a strong directional element to the light, with a nearby window or doorway illuminating the subject. In Exmouth, I was a founder member of weekly experimental class, trying out different techniques and benefitting from cross-fertilisation of ideas. This year, after our relocation to Derbyshire, I have joined both Whaley Bridge and Macclesfield Art Groups. I look forward to exploring new creative directions. |
